Withdrawing from runoff elections hurts the process

In state elections, if nobody gets a simple majority you enter a runoff. In the last election there have been several candidates who are withdrawing from the runoff elections, leaving the other candidate in the runoff to win. I don’t know if it is happening more often (or less often) this year, but it is something that should not be allowed.

Why? Well, if there are 7 people in an election and 1 person gets 40% of the vote and the other 5 split the rest, it is possibe that 60% of the people really did not want the person who got 40% of the vote to be elected. If  you allow the candidate who comes in 2nd to drop out and end the election, then the voters may wind up with an elected official that they did not want.

The election code should be changed so that each other candidate is given the opportunity to run in the runoff if the 2nd place candidate does not feel up for it. If the person in 1st place winds up winning then more power to him. If not, then the voters can really vote for who they want in the first election and then they can be allowed to vote against who they don’t want in the 2nd election. I won’t hold my breath though, I am sure that an incumbant won’t give up any advantage he/she might have in the future.
