STD: Just teach the truth!
Tuesday, March 11th, 2008Why can’t we just teach kids “Abstinence from all sexual activity is the best way to prevent pregnancy and the transmission of STD. If you choose to not abstain, ways to protect yourself include (but are not limited to): only having sex in a monogomous relationship, properly using a condom 100% of the time, getting regular tests, making sure your partners get regular tests, and knowing the sexual history of your partyer. The more of these you follow, the safer you will be”.
Don’t just say: “Teens need to hear the dual message that STDs can be prevented by abstinence and condoms” becuase that is not complete. Condoms do not prevent STD like abstinence does, and while kids may use condoms for sexual intercourse, they might not use them for oral sex, leaving them unprotected. There is a lot of misinformation that needs to be fought and blanket statements just don’t do any good.
Don’t say: “although they do have an 85 percent failure rate…..To have an actual club that distributes condoms encourages sex among teens, and also gives the teen population the false idea that condoms are a reliable form of birth control” because those are just flat out lies.
Just say the truth. The lives of our children depend on it.
