Rivals.com has an article discussing USC and how they may have earned themselves a “split” of the national championship.

The best-laid plans of the Bowl Championship Series and decorum be damned, the Trojans screamed. Showtime was back in L.A., and any talk about the national championship shouldn’t be centered solely on Ohio State and LSU.

Say what? USC is part of the BCS. USC, by participating in the BCS has agreed that they would participate in the BCS selection process and accept the national champion that is created by the ranking system and the winner between the matchup of the #1 and #2 teams at the end of the season. Those teams are Ohio State and LSU. USC did not earn its way to the #1 or #2 position so it does not have any way to claim any right to any share of the national championship. There is one champion and all the talk about who is the national championship should absolutely center on Ohio State and LSU.

Yes, as discussed before in a previous post, the AP sometimes likes to name its own so called “national champion” and believe that the title somehow means something. To me, accepting the AP championship is accepting the “sore loser award”. It would be like the AP giving an award to the New York Yankees and calling it the “AP National Championship of Baseball of 2007″.

In my opinion, College Football needs a playoff. The NCAA does it for Baseball and it does it for Basketball. Why not football? Because it would make too much sense? Allow everyone who wins their division to get into the playoffs, allow for a couple wildcard teams, rank the teams based on their BCS rankings, and go from there. You could allow 12 or 16 teams in and then nobody would ever get to complain that an undefeated team did not make it, or that some team was not given their due, or some other lame excuse.

Although, if the NCAA did  implement a  playoff system, I bet the AP would still crown its own little “national champion” anyway. If they do ever implement a playoff  system, one criteria for inclusion should be that you never accept a bogus AP “title”.

Olindo Mare hit his extra point and kicked 2 perfect onside kick attempts… well perfect except for the fact that Josh Bullocks couldn’t hold onto the ball. I thought you earned your way onto the onside kick squad because you are good at catching the ball.

Not that the loss is the fault of Bullocks, he did have 5 tackles and a sack. Also, the Saints should have never put themselves in the situation of being 3 scores down.

The season is far from over and I truely believe that the Saints have far more talent than any other team in the NFC South. It is possible that the NFC South champ could finish at 9-7, so the bar is pretty low. Let’s just hope the Saints wake up and finish strong.

The AP doesn’t determine the national champion. The BCS determines the national champion.

While it is likely that when the results come out later today that LSU will be #1 in the BCS, why should we care what the AP says about who is #1?
